Living Room

Despite its grand Edwardian proportions, an awkwardly placed entrance made furniture arrangement challenging in the space. The décor was dated circa 1980’s, and original radiators and fire grates had been replaced with uninspired electric grills. Although the room benefitted from large front facing windows and original French doors, the environment was a bit gloomy, and the remaining period features were worn and needed a refresh. Though this was the largest room in the home, the space was being under-utilised; cut off from the rest of the house with a lack of traffic flow.

Responding to the issues the room presented, the entrance was repositioned and widened to the front foyer to gain additional morning light and direct access to the space while simultaneously providing better proportions for furniture arrangement. The French doors to the back garden had vertical side windows added, and new glazing replaced the front window. An additional interior door was punched through for direct access to the dining room, which supported the desire to welcome and entertain dinner guests. The overall result of these changes improved the utility of the room, creating a relaxed formal living space that is light, fresh and bright in the day, and cosy and welcoming at night.
